We Say
Forget chasing the thickest foam. Auto-Foam concentrates on what really matters: removing as much dirt as possible before you touch the paintwork.
We've always believed that a good pre-wash is one of the most important steps in looking after your paintwork. It doesn't matter how carefully you wash a car if the surface is still covered in abrasive road grime when you first reach for your wash mitt. The more contamination you can remove beforehand, the less chance there is of dragging it across the finish.
Bilt Hamber Auto-Foam has been one of our favourite products for this job for years. It's a highly effective, water-based snow foam developed with a very clear purpose: to remove as much dirt as possible without physical contact, leaving the paintwork in a much better condition for the subsequent hand wash.
What makes Auto-Foam particularly interesting is that Bilt Hamber hasn't designed it simply to produce the thickest, most impressive-looking foam. In fact, the manufacturer makes a point of explaining that huge amounts of clinging foam aren't necessarily beneficial. It's the cleaning solution's ability to wet the surface, penetrate contamination and carry it away that really matters.
Auto-Foam uses a carefully developed blend of surfactants and wetting agents to achieve this. As the foam begins to break down, the cleaning solution progressively works into the accumulated road film, helping loosen dirt from the surface. When you pressure rinse the vehicle, a substantial amount of that contamination can be removed without ever touching the paintwork.
We particularly like the balance between cleaning ability and surface compatibility. Auto-Foam is alkaline, but it's also non-caustic. That's an important distinction. Bilt Hamber has specifically developed the formulation to clean effectively without the paint-damaging characteristics associated with caustic cleaning agents.
It's also suitable for regular use on vehicles protected with compatible waxes and sealants. We wouldn't suggest that every protective product will react identically, but Bilt Hamber confirms that Auto-Foam can be used on most waxed finishes, including those protected with its own Double Speed-Wax.
One area where it's important to follow the manufacturer's advice is dilution. Auto-Foam is specified according to its Panel Impact Ratio, or PIR. This is the concentration of cleaning product that actually reaches the vehicle after the foam lance or pressure washer has mixed it with water, not simply the ratio you've prepared in the bottle.
Bilt Hamber recommends between 1% and 5% PIR, with approximately 4% being typical for effective contactless cleaning. This means the correct quantity of concentrate can vary considerably depending on your foam lance and pressure washer. Taking the time to establish the dilution your equipment produces is worthwhile if you want consistent results.
For particularly dirty vehicles, Auto-Foam can make an impressive difference before the contact wash. Its relatively modest foam thickness shouldn't be mistaken for poor cleaning performance. If anything, it's a reminder that the quality of a snow foam should be judged by how much contamination it removes, rather than how good it looks in a photograph.
Once the pre-wash has been rinsed away, we'd follow with Bilt Hamber Auto-Wash and a suitable wash mitt. It's an excellent combination for enthusiasts who want a thorough but carefully controlled washing routine.
For us, Auto-Foam remains a benchmark for effective pre-washing. It's an excellent example of Bilt Hamber's approach to car care: concentrate on the chemistry, concentrate on the cleaning, and let the results do the talking.
Key Features
Description
Bilt Hamber Auto-Foam is a highly effective, non-caustic alkaline snow foam designed to remove stubborn road grime, traffic film and general contamination before contact washing.
Developed using advanced biodegradable surfactants and wetting agents, Auto-Foam penetrates accumulated dirt and helps lift it away from vehicle surfaces without scrubbing. Its rapid-wetting action prioritises cleaning effectiveness over unnecessarily thick, persistent foam.
The water-based formulation is suitable for regular use on compatible automotive finishes and is designed to work with pressure washer foam lances. It can also be applied using a suitable pump sprayer, although pressure washing is recommended for removing the loosened contamination.
Why you'll love it:
✓ Powerful pre-wash cleaning without physical contact
✓ Helps remove stubborn road grime and traffic film
✓ Reduces abrasive contamination before hand washing
✓ Non-caustic alkaline formulation
✓ Suitable for regular use on compatible protected paintwork
✓ Advanced wetting agents penetrate accumulated dirt
✓ Rapid foam breakdown supports effective cleaning
✓ Biodegradable surfactant formulation
✓ Designed for pressure washer foam lances
✓ Can also be applied using a suitable pump sprayer
✓ Recommended application concentration of 1-5% PIR
✓ Typical intensive pre-wash concentration of 4% PIR

For the best results: Apply Auto-Foam using a suitable pressure washer foam lance, such as the PA Foam Lance. The concentration reaching the vehicle will depend on your equipment, so calculate the Panel Impact Ratio rather than relying solely on a fixed bottle dosage.
Make dilution easier: The Bilt Hamber 30ml Pump Dispenser fits compatible new-style 5L containers and makes measuring concentrate quicker and more convenient.
Complete the wash: After thoroughly rinsing away Auto-Foam, follow with Bilt Hamber Auto-Wash for a carefully controlled contact wash.
Considering an alternative? Bilt Hamber Touch-Less is another highly effective pre-wash, with a different formulation and lower recommended panel concentrations. Auto-Foam remains an excellent choice for customers who appreciate its established non-caustic cleaning performance.
Please note: Auto-Foam is alkaline, not pH-neutral. Its recommended dilutions are measured as Panel Impact Ratio (PIR), meaning the concentration actually delivered to the vehicle. Always use on cool surfaces and never allow the product to dry during application.

How To Use
1) Prepare the vehicle:
Ensure the surfaces are cool to the touch and the vehicle is positioned away from direct sunlight. Do not apply Auto-Foam to hot panels or allow it to dry during use.
2) Establish your Panel Impact Ratio:
Auto-Foam should be diluted according to the concentration actually reaching the vehicle. Bilt Hamber recommends 1-5% PIR, with approximately 4% suitable for effective touchless cleaning.
3) Calibrate your foam lance:
Fill the foam lance bottle with plain water, set the detergent feed to maximum and discharge it into a large measuring container until the bottle is empty. Measure the total volume collected. Multiply this volume by 0.04 to calculate the amount of Auto-Foam required for a 4% PIR. Add that quantity of concentrate to the lance bottle and top up with water.
4) Apply the solution:
Using your pressure washer and foam lance, apply Auto-Foam evenly across the vehicle. The foam does not need to be excessively thick to provide effective cleaning.
5) Allow the product to work:
At a typical 4% PIR, Bilt Hamber recommends approximately five minutes of dwell time. Allow the cleaning solution to penetrate and loosen contamination, but never let it dry on the surface.
6) Pressure rinse thoroughly:
Rinse the entire vehicle carefully using a pressure washer, removing the cleaning solution and loosened contamination. Pay attention to lower panels, wheel arches and areas where grime accumulates.
7) Complete the contact wash:
Once the pre-wash has been removed, continue with a suitable car shampoo such as Bilt Hamber Auto-Wash and a clean wash mitt. With much of the contamination already removed, the contact wash can be carried out with less risk of inflicting wash marring.
Alternative pump sprayer application:
Bilt Hamber confirms that Auto-Foam can also be applied through a suitable pump sprayer. A 4% dilution is recommended for this method. It will produce less foam, but the cleaning ingredients still work effectively. Pressure rinse after allowing the solution to dwell.
Important Notes:
✓ Use on cool surfaces away from direct sunlight
✓ Recommended application concentration is 1-5% PIR
✓ Typical intensive pre-wash concentration is 4% PIR
✓ PIR refers to the concentration at the vehicle, not in the lance bottle
✓ Calibrate your foam lance for accurate dosing
✓ Approximately five minutes of dwell time at typical concentration
✓ Never allow the product to dry on the surface
✓ Foam thickness is not a reliable measure of cleaning effectiveness
✓ Pressure rinse thoroughly before contact washing
✓ Check compatibility with existing protective finishes
✓ Wear suitable protective gloves and eye protection
✓ Follow the current product label and Safety Data Sheet
