Koch-Chemie PreFoam Efficient Pfe

There's no shortage of snow foams and pre-wash cleaners on the market, but every now and again a product comes along that really gets your attention. Koch-Chemie PreFoam Efficient is one of those products. Having tested it ourselves, we've been particularly impressed by just how much dirt it can remove before you even touch the vehicle.

PreFoam Efficient, usually abbreviated to Pfe, is a highly concentrated alkaline pre-cleaner developed for demanding vehicle washing. Its combination of surfactants and complexing agents is designed to loosen stubborn contamination, including insect remains, bird droppings and general environmental dirt.

What makes it stand out is its sheer cleaning ability. Where a gentle, pH-neutral snow foam might soften light road grime, Pfe is designed to tackle much heavier contamination. That makes it especially useful during the winter months, when vehicles accumulate particularly stubborn road film, dirt and traffic grime.

We've found its performance particularly impressive, especially considering the relatively short working time. Koch-Chemie specifies a maximum dwell time of just one minute. That might sound brief compared with conventional snow foams, but this isn't a product intended to sit on the vehicle for five or ten minutes. Its chemistry is designed to work quickly.

Another appealing feature is its foaming ability. Despite being a serious alkaline cleaner, Pfe produces good foam coverage, helping distribute the solution across the surface. It also has a fresh citrus fragrance, which makes the washing process a little more pleasant.

There is an important distinction between PreFoam Efficient and the gentler products in the Koch-Chemie range. A pH of 13.5 makes Pfe highly alkaline, so we wouldn't recommend treating it as an everyday maintenance shampoo for a carefully waxed car. Strong alkaline cleaning can compromise certain waxes, sealants and existing protective treatments, particularly when used repeatedly or at stronger concentrations.

Interestingly, when we tested Pfe on a vehicle previously treated with Koch-Chemie Wet Gloss, the water-repellent behaviour still appeared to be performing well afterwards. That was encouraging, although it shouldn't be taken as evidence that the cleaner is universally safe for coatings or protective finishes. Different products and application concentrations can produce different results.

The manufacturer's instructions also distinguish between specific cleaning applications. For insect removal, Pfe can be used at 1:20, while chassis pre-cleaning is specified at 1:30 and truck pre-cleaning at 1:15 to 1:20. Koch-Chemie's VDA Class B compliance, meanwhile, applies at a maximum application concentration of 1:100 and a maximum one-minute dwell time. These figures shouldn't be treated as interchangeable.

We'd recommend Pfe for enthusiasts and professionals who want serious pre-wash cleaning power, particularly when dealing with winter grime, insects or heavily soiled vehicles. For regular gentle washing of a protected car, Koch-Chemie Gentle Snow Foam remains a more suitable choice.

For us, PreFoam Efficient is a standout product because it genuinely delivers on its promise of intensive cleaning. Used correctly, it can remove an impressive amount of contamination without physical contact, helping reduce the dirt left behind for the subsequent wash. It's powerful, efficient and one of the most convincing alkaline pre-washes we've used.
